A federal tax credit that has helped wind-power projects in Montana is set to expire the end of this year -- and efforts to renew it are up in the air.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., has been pushing to have the payroll tax-extension bill before Congress include an extension of the energy tax-credit beyond December 2012, when it's set to expire.

Yet while congressional negotiators appeared close to a deal late Tuesday on the payroll tax bill, it wasn't clear if the energy tax credit was part of that deal.

Earlier press reports said U.S. House Republicans were resisting an inclusion of the renewable-energy tax credit in the payroll tax bill.

Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., indicated Tuesday that he's in favor of extending the energy tax credit for wind, solar and other renewable power projects, but didn't say whether it should be in the payroll tax bill or a separate measure.
