Congress Stepping Up To Climate Solutions

May 14, 2009

Seattle – Climate Solutions Executive Director Gregg Small said the following on news that House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) has negotiated an agreement on key provisions of the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES).

Climate Solutions joins President Obama and millions of Americans in thanking Chairman Waxman and the House Energy and Commerce Committee for moving quickly to tackle the climate challenge and break ground for a new clean energy economy.

As the bill moves forward, we urge Congress to strengthen the policy by removing loopholes and giveaways to fossil fuel interests while delivering more good clean energy jobs. Protecting low-income households from high fossil fuel prices and restoring American leadership in global climate negotiations are also vital to the success of the policy.

By capping global warming pollution, and by creating incentives for clean, renewable energy and energy efficiency, a strong national clean energy bill can open the door to millions of new jobs in the most important economic sector for the 21st century. It will also allow the U.S. to join the world in confronting our greatest threat: runaway climate change. But Congress needs to hold firm for real, science-based climate solutions that dramatically accelerate investment in green jobs and a clean economy.

It’s time for Congress to stand and deliver on the promise of a new energy economy and effective climate solutions.
