Puget Sound Joins Thousands of 350.org Events Across the Planet
World’s Largest Day of Practical Action to fight Climate Change
On October 10, Washingtonians across the state will pick up shovels, solar panels and phones for the 10/10/10 Global Work Party, the world’s largest day of practical and political action to fight the climate crisis.
(SEATTLE, WA) -- Like many concerned about climate change, Bonnie Frye Hemphill was looking for a way that she could make a positive difference on an issue that seemed so complex.
“The state of our earth’s climate and the political climate are daunting. My generation doesn’t want to pay for costly storms, we don’t want to pay for oil wars, and we don’t the U.S. to follow other countries in clean-energy investments,” Hemphill explained. “But the Global Work Party on 10/10/10 shows there is hope and hunger for changes big and small to address global warming. This Sunday, we’re throwing a party to celebrate the future, and everyone is invited – including our elected officials. It’s time they follow our lead and get to work building the future’s clean economy.”
On October 10th, Bonnie will join Washingtonians across the state picking up shovels, solar panels and phones for the 10/10/10 Global Work Party, the world’s largest day of practical and political action to fight the climate crisis. In Seattle many residents will join Bonnie in the Coal to Solar Transformation at Gasworks park at 10 a.m.--sponsored by Sierra Club, Earth Ministry, CoolMom, Wallingford Solar, Coal-Free Washington--and then will disperse to help install energy efficient light bulbs on their block, plant trees, sprout vegetable seeds for gardens, remove invasive weeds, recycle car seats for reuse, participate in the Million Letter March, attend climate friendly coffee hours, join flashmobs, or attend the Dream a Sound Future exhibit of at the Seattle Center.
There are over 30 work parties in the Greater Puget Sound region whose participants will join millions of people in over 7,014 events in 188 countries around the world.
The Global Work Party on 10/10/10 is sponsored by 350.org. Climate science tells us 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide is the safe upper limit for our atmosphere to support healthy human life and
the ecosystems upon which we depend. In the last 200 years, we have shot from about 280 parts per million to nearly 390, and the CO2 pollution level is still increasing every year.
“From personal action to prayer to political involvement, we want to show Puget Sound residents that there are simple and real solutions to climate change that we can do every day,” said LeeAnne Beres, Executive Director, Earth Ministry. “We’re getting to work in Seattle to address global warming, now our politicians need to get to work in Olympia and Washington, D.C.”
Climate Solutions is a northwest regional organization working to accelerate practical and profitable solutions to global warming by galvanizing leadership, growing investment and bridging divides.
