In July 2015, Governor Inslee directed the Washington State Department of Ecology to take regulatory steps to develop a cap on carbon emissions. According to Governor Inslee:

Carbon pollution and the climate change it causes pose a very real and existential threat to our state. Farmers in the Yakima Valley know this. Shellfish growers on the coast know this. Firefighters battling Eastern Washington blazes know this. And children suffering from asthma know this all too well and are right to question why Washington hasn’t acted to protect them.

Governor Inslee set a very aggressive timeframe for the regulatory cap to ensure action in 2016. At the same time, two separate carbon ballot initiatives are soliciting signatures for the 2016 session.

Carbon Washington proposes a revenue-neutral carbon tax. The result would offset the state sales tax by one full percentage point through a carbon tax of $25 per metric ton of CO2 on fossil fuels consumed in the state.

Climate Solutions and the Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy (no affiliated to the CleanTech Alliance) are planning a second carbon ballot initiative to reduce global warming pollution, strengthen our economy and make sure all Washington families have a better future. No policy details have been shared to date.
