Bio
Kurt brings over a decade of experience in the maritime industry to his work as the Maritime Policy Manager for Climate Solutions. During his time at sea, he worked in several different sectors primarily on the East Coast, in the Gulf of Mexico, and on the Great Lakes. Starting as a deckhand he earned an unlimited mate’s license before transitioning to policy work. His approach is grounded in that experience with a mission to help create a maritime industry that is more sustainable for people and the environment.
Growing up on the Great Lakes, Kurt attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison earning a BS in Natural Resources - Environmental Sociology. There he was actively involved in numerous environmental and social justice campaigns. Early in his maritime career he participated in ship-based conservation efforts and environmental education aboard historic rigged tall ships. Recently he completed a master’s degree in Marine and Environmental Affairs from the University of Washington with a thesis project on offshore wind and equity.
