As 2018 kicks off, we’re already running full steam ahead toward our New Year’s resolution: Transitioning the Northwest to 100% clean energy faster than anywhere else in the nation.
As a native Oregonian and the new Oregon Director at Climate Solutions, I know that our state is ready to blaze a trail to a clean energy future. And after a year filled with alarming climate emergencies here at home and frustrating obstruction at the federal level, it’s time for Oregon to take serious steps now to tackle the climate crisis.
In the near-term, we’re focusing most of our energy on passing the Clean Energy Jobs bill at the Oregon Legislature next month. Clean Energy Jobs caps Oregon’s rising climate pollution and invests in accelerating the transition to renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean transportation across the state. Developed in partnership with those most impacted by climate change, it supports a just transition for our rural and urban communities across Oregon.
Other strategies we’re working on include helping make Portland and Multnomah County’s 100% clean energy commitments a reality; calling on TriMet to transition from a diesel-powered bus fleet to electric buses; building partnerships and crafting policies to achieve 100% clean energy; and helping local leaders develop clean energy strategies in their communities.
This work builds on some exciting wins we celebrated last year. Along with our partners, we:
- Passed groundbreaking commitments to 100% clean energy in Portland and Multnomah County;
- Protected Oregonians’ right to clean fuels;
- Successfully halted Portland General Electric’s plans to build an unnecessary gas plant and supported their increased investment in renewable energy; and
- Secured state commitments for increased energy efficiency in new buildings and greater support and incentives for transitioning to electric vehicles.
As we build on that momentum in 2018, I’m incredibly excited about where our state is headed. I hope you are too!
