They’re headed right for us! Shell’s massive Arctic drilling climate catastrophe rigs are just days away from arriving in Seattle.
This January, behind closed doors, the Port of Seattle irresponsibly gave Shell the go-ahead to use Seattle as home base for its Arctic drilling operations. They ignored Shell’s terrible safety record, the very high risk of a major Arctic oil spill, and devastating impacts to our climate.
The Port Commissioners hoped that deal would go unnoticed. Instead, they’re feeling the pressure of thousands of our emails, phone calls, and in-person pleas to tear up the Shell lease. We must stand up to Shell now: the future depends on us.
Join us Sunday, April 26, for a peaceful demonstration in Seattle to tell Shell and our elected leaders at the Port of Seattle that we won’t stand for Arctic drilling.
Shell No! Seattle Draws the Line: a family-friendly rally and march
Sunday, April 26, 2 PM at Myrtle Edwards Park: 3130 Alaskan Way in Seattle
We'll gather together at Myrtle Edwards Park to hear from inspiring speakers including Sundance Chief Reuben George, Annie Leonard of Greenpeace USA, and a star lineup of local climate justice speakers including Jill Mangaliman of Got Green and Sarra Tekola of Divest UW.
Then we will make the short walk along the water to Pier 69 and the Port of Seattle office where we'll present our Commissioners with letters, photographs, and small art projects representing what we could lose if Shell’s climate-breaking plans go forward. We will ask Port Commissioners to join us there. But if they don't, they'll still have proof of the fierce love and desire for justice that fuels us.
Join us April 26th to send a message to our Commissioners: Shell No! Arctic oil must stay in the ground.
Like coal exports and exploding oil trains, Arctic oil drilling is extremely dangerous -- and completely unnecessary. Shell’s drilling plans would devastate both the environment and peoples of the Arctic and communities already suffering effects of climate change like extreme weather, droughts, and sea-level rise.
It’s up to us reject the mentality that says there's no better way to power our world. We can do better! RSVP to join us now.
Spread the word on Facebook, too!
Can’t make it? Please take 2 minutes to email them: commission-public-records@portseattle.org and tell them you oppose allowing the Port of Seattle to be used by Shell as part of its Arctic drilling operations.
