Dec. 12 marked the third anniversary of the adoption of the Paris climate accord. And, as international delegates meet again in Katowice, Poland, it is clear that so much work remains for us to do to protect our climate and safeguard a healthy future for our kids and grandkids. Regardless of the President’s reckless stance on the Paris agreement and the world climate stage, WE in Washington are very much IN, and we have real solutions at hand. Please tell your legislators we need them to act on climate in the upcoming legislative session.
The Evergreen State has nothing to fear and everything to gain from our transition to clean energy. After all, renewable energy isn’t “alternative” energy here in Washington – it’s the backbone of our clean energy economy. We are already a world leader in energy efficiency, squeezing more work out of our energy supply and keeping more energy dollars in consumers’ pockets. But with the climate crisis upon us, resting on our laurels is not an option. Our communities and the world need bold leadership in our efforts to end our dependence on polluting fossil fuels before climate disruption becomes devastatingly unmanageable. This is the time and the place to show that leadership.
Together we can make 2019 a year of clean energy progress in Washington. Our legislature will consider several measures which, together, can make a massive difference. This year, legislators will consider an ambitious and achievable range of climate policies, including 100% clean electricity, a Clean Fuels Standard that will cut our reliance on fossil fuels in transportation, building standards that will reduce our energy use, and a set of bills that will help electrify cars, buses, and trucks.
Please contact your legislators and tell them we want to make sure that 2019 is the year Washington prioritizes protecting our climate. As Governor Inslee said this week, we are in the 11th hour—but it is our hour to act.
